Dulux Colour of the Year 2018

Last year it was “Denim Drift” – and sure enough, we’ve seen an influx of blues in home furnishings in 2017, from vibrant teal to navy – but 2018 is going to be all about mauve. Yes, the colour specialists at Dulux Global Aesthetic Centre have chosen the shade they predict will define our interiors over the coming 12 months, and it’s “Heart Wood”, a dusky mauve “designed to bring a sense of comfort to the home”.

2018 trend: seventies chic

Move over mid-century modern – if the autumn/winter catwalks and trend forecasters are right, there’ll be a definite seventies vibe to our interiors in 2018. Designers such as Jonathan Adler have long championed the look but it seems it’s going mainstream; according to Pinterest, macramé wall hangings, chunky knitted throws and house plants are among the most-pinned items this month.

Pantone reconnects with nature

Every year we look forward to colour prediction season, but although a number of brands panic and gaze into their crystal ball early, there is only one prediction that holds credence the world over. We are referring to Pantone, the colour institute who place ridiculous amounts of effort into their shade analysis.

Welcome to COTY 2017: Denim Drift

15 Feb 2017 by Tom Bourne

We love colour, something a quick scroll through our blog posts will testify! It comes as little surprise, then, that ‘Colour of the Year’ announcements really make us tick, whether it’s the Colour Institute, Pantone, or perhaps a producer of pristine paints like Dulux...

The latter have released their big prediction for 2017 following months of research and development carried out by a crack team of experts, this year’s choice a stimulating grey-blue named Denim Drift.

A slight move away from what Dulux attempted last year (remember Cherished Gold?), this time we look to a fresh and uplifting palette rather than over-the-top luxury and opulence. Denim colourways were big news on the catwalk in 2016, and it seems this look will have its big break in interiors just 12 months on.

“Our review of international architecture, fashion and design trends revealed that blue is the colour of the moment. To make it relevant for your home, the team chose a blue that works as well in a kitchen as it does in a bedroom. Denim Drift is the must-have colour for 2017 - it will look great on your wall!”

These are the views of an excitable Heleen van Gent, Creative Director at the Dulux Global Aesthetics Centre. Heleen has years of industry experience exploring the latest and greatest shades and colourways, so who are we to argue! The Denim Drift concept was only recently released, but Heleen expects it to gain big traction over the coming weeks and months, so certainly one to keep tabs on.

Denim Drift is not reserved for wall space alone, as even the good people at Dulux will admit! Accompanying surfaces are just as important if the scheme is to work in its entirety, one such example being choice of floor. This is where Crown Floors seamlessly joins proceedings, with various blue tones found throughout its carpet stable, for instance in Alderley Edge.

The vast majority of Crown’s carpet collections hold options in icy grey and silver, too, so if blue carpet is a tad brave for your tastes, then look to these as an ideal Denim Drift accompaniment. These more neutral tones will allow your denim chairs, sofas, cushions and fabrics to shine through, the carpet portraying the unsung hero amidst a sea of punchy colour.

With the cold months approaching, why not try a winter warmer in the form of new SATINO Exquisite or Finesse? We're suckers for silky lustre, and that’s exactly what this super soft fibre will introduce to your home.
