Get the look: teaming stripes with plains

Striped or plain carpet? It’s a decorating dilemma. Plains, of course, are the more in-demand and arguably “safer” choice, creating a neutral background that allows the furniture in a room to take centre stage. If you own lots of patterned or brightly coloured furnishings and want to avoid an overly “busy” look, plain coloured carpets are definitely the way to go.

Dulux Colour of the Year 2018

Last year it was “Denim Drift” – and sure enough, we’ve seen an influx of blues in home furnishings in 2017, from vibrant teal to navy – but 2018 is going to be all about mauve. Yes, the colour specialists at Dulux Global Aesthetic Centre have chosen the shade they predict will define our interiors over the coming 12 months, and it’s “Heart Wood”, a dusky mauve “designed to bring a sense of comfort to the home”.

2018 trend: seventies chic

Move over mid-century modern – if the autumn/winter catwalks and trend forecasters are right, there’ll be a definite seventies vibe to our interiors in 2018. Designers such as Jonathan Adler have long championed the look but it seems it’s going mainstream; according to Pinterest, macramé wall hangings, chunky knitted throws and house plants are among the most-pinned items this month.

Pantone reconnects with nature

Every year we look forward to colour prediction season, but although a number of brands panic and gaze into their crystal ball early, there is only one prediction that holds credence the world over. We are referring to Pantone, the colour institute who place ridiculous amounts of effort into their shade analysis.

Get the look: teaming stripes with plains

2 Nov 2017 by Tom Bourne

Striped or plain carpet? It’s a decorating dilemma. Plains, of course, are the more in-demand and arguably “safer” choice, creating a neutral background that allows the furniture in a room to take centre stage. If you own lots of patterned or brightly coloured furnishings and want to avoid an overly “busy” look, plain coloured carpets are definitely the way to go.

Stripes, on the other hand, have never gone out of fashion in interior decorating – and for very good reasons. Not only can a striped carpet add personality to your home and make a real style statement, it can have a dramatic effect on the look of a room by making it appear wider or longer than it actually is, and by drawing the eye towards key features. Stripes are also extremely versatile: in wide bands of bold hues they’re striking and contemporary, while narrower stripes in subtler shades have a timeless elegance.

It’s perfectly possible, however, to enjoy the best of both worlds. One trend that’s definitely on the up is “mix and match”, with stripes and plains used within the same space –particularly in hallways and on stairs and landings. To make it easy to emulate, Crown Floors has created the Penrose and Penrose Stripe ranges, a selection of plain and patterned luxurious Satin Soft twist carpets in gorgeous coordinating colourways that can be used in combination to effortlessly create a pulled-together, sophisticated look. There are nine plains to choose from in beautiful neutral shades, including Silver Dawn, Smoky Taupe and Gull Grey, and three corresponding stripe designs – Taupe Ribbon, Silver Ribbon and Grayscale Ribbon – all of which are supremely easy to care for and bleach-treatable in the event of stains. Made from robust two-ply yarn they’re also fantastically hardwearing, and come with impressive 15-year wear and stain warranties.

At Crown Floors we’re committed to providing you with the widest possible choice of looks and colourways, to give you ultimate flexibility when it comes to decorating your home. For more patterned carpets check out our Glendevon range of contemporary tartans and bold, mid-century inspired geometric designs.
